Our Hewlett-Packard 6P printer started misfeeding paper and
leaving black marks on the back of pages. We eventually figured
out that the exit roller (also called the "exit delivery roller"
or "fuser delivery roller") had deterioriated and need
replacing. We found the part (RB1-9181-020) for about $10.
Disassembly took a while to figure out. To help anyone else
with this problem (and as an excuse to learn some more about Inkscape), I put together
these step-by-step instructions:
The "front" of the printer is the end
with the "Hewlett Packard LaserJet 6P" label. Remove the
paper tray. Open the I/O bay on the left rear and disconnect
I/O cables. Open the power bay access door in the right rear
and disconnect the power cable.
Open the alternate paper feed
door on the front. Press the top cover release button (right
side, top front corner), open top cover. Remove the toner
cartridge.
Press the left cover release button (front left corner of
toner access opening), then slide left cover forward and out. Remove
the four screws inside the toner access opening that help hold down
the top cover.
The top cover is retained by clips on all four corners. The next two photos show the rear clips. In each case, pull the cover to the rear then up to release the clips. (Do this with the printer standing upright. It is tilted in the photos only for visibility.) Repeat with the lower front right and left corners, pulling the cover to the front then up to release the clips. Once all four corners are released, the cover will easily slide directly up.
If you have trouble with the front right corner, I suggest you turn the printer on its side (power switch up) and look near the rubber foot. About 1 cm outboard, 1 cm toward the front, and 1 cm above the foot is the clip (at the end of the black guides between which the cover slides). You should set the printer upright before actually releasing the clip.
When you get the front corner released, the back corner on that
side will probably slip back and you'll have to release it
again. Like many things, it's easy after a bit of practice.
Turn the printer so the fuser is facing you (i.e. where the
rear paper tray was). The fuser cover (flat black plastic,
about 3 by 25 cm.) has a small tab at the right end. Press
that forward, slide the cover to the right, then swing the
left end out and remove the cover.
Remove the four screws (two machine screws, two
self-tapping screws), pull the green plastic handle, and
remove the fuser assembly from the printer.
The left end of the exit roller is held by a black plastic
retainer. The retainer has a clip that engages a groove on the
shaft. Lift the clip out of the goove, remove the retainer,
push the shaft slightly to the right, and lift the left end
free.
The gear is has a similar clip that engages a groove on the
other end of the shaft. Lift that clip out of the groove,
slide the shaft out of the gear, then remove the shaft.
Insert the new shaft and roller assembly. Reassemble in
the opposite order. After reconnecting the power cable, be
careful when closing the door. It is not on hinges - make
sure the door is slid all the way forward before trying to
close it.
